- Conveyor belt top covers experience wear due to tribological interactions with bulk material streams, resulting in significant expenditure on belt replacement and lost profit associated with plant shutdowns. This problem is amplified by the current lack of understanding of the complex interactions that govern wear in bulk materials handling applications. This study involves an assessment of the wear performance of a variety of belt covers across a range of wear conditions. The test regime included novel test methods that utilise bulk material mediums to develop abrasive and impact wear mechanisms representative of those present in industrial belt conveying applications. The relative wear performance of various covers in the Australian Standard AS1683.21 wear test is compared to that observed in the ASTM G65 test method and in custom bulk material based wear tests. Analysis of the wear performance in each test is also undertaken with respect to the physical properties of each rubber compound. The results demonstrated disparities in both the relative performance of the rubber samples across the tests and the physical properties that govern the performance in a given wear environment. The findings highlight inadequacies in the current Australian Standard method for ranking belt cover abrasion resistance and demonstrate the importance of utilising wear tests that are representative of the intended conveyor application.
